Abstract

The purification of effluent particularly from paper-making, is effected by the addition to the raw water, before or after removing large impurities, of a floatable flotation agent with the property of adsorptively binding organic material in solution or colloidal dispersion, and more especially by the addition of a biologically active organic sludge and/or inorganic materials such as iron, calcium or aluminium hydroxide flocculants. The process may be carried out in several stages in series connected flotation tanks with fresh addition of the flotation agent in each stage, at least a part of the solid produced being transferred from one tank to the next. Known coagulants may also be added, particularly organic polymers and especially in the last treatment tank, or in special treatment tanks between successive tanks.
