Abstract

The catalyst is obtained by incorporating in a inert support, a thorium compound, which decomposes to the oxide on heating at 200-600 degrees C, pref. between 300 and 400 degrees C. The inert support is pref. obtained by heating thorium oxide or a compound which decomposes into the oxide, at a temp. >750 degrees C and esp. 800-1200 degrees C. The pref. thorium compounds which are incorporated in the inert support are the nitrate, acetate, carbonate, hydroxide and esp. the oxalate. The catalyst is used for the preparation of olefins from sec. alcohols. It is highly selective, very reactive, and maintains its reactivity and selectivity over a period.
