Abrasive powder comps. of carborundum SiC, corundum Al2O3 and opt. quartz are prepd. by treating natural aluminium silicate comprising clay, feldspar or other, or their mixtures, on a mixture of these silicates with a bauxite, with a gaseous mixture contg. 50-99% H2 and 1-50% of a hydrocarbon or a mixture of hydrocarbons at 1000 degrees C-1500 degrees C.
