The invention concerns production of paper and cardboard, in which with use of a headbox one strives to achieve high uniformity in the stock before discharge onto the screen. For this purpose the headbox is provided with different arrangements to maintain turbulence in the stock, like hollow rolls and a stock agitator incorporated in the outlet channel of the stock right before the discharge gap, consisting of flat blades parallel in the transverse direction of the headbox which are imparted a rapid back-and-forth motion. Mixing of the stock, however, is incomplete and consists primarily of shifting of the stock laterally with a poor mixing effect. If, on the other hand, as in the present invention, blades are provided with holes or cutouts, an eddy is formed at each site of these during agitation. All these eddies together produce effective turbulence of the stock over the entire length of the headbox gap. <IMAGE>
