Abstract

A process for producing a hydrogen-rich gas stream from the hydrogen- and hydrocarbon-containing outflow from a reaction zone. The multistep process essentially comprises the outflow being subjected to a first phase separation under conventional conditions, after which a cooled part of the vapour phase is once again brought into contact with a cooled 10-20% portion of the liquid hydrocarbon phase in order to bring about a second phase separation at a temperature which is substantially lower than the temperature used in the first phase separation. The use of a 10-20% portion of the hydrocarbon phase obtained in the first phase separation, instead of the whole quantity, results in considerable economies in equipment and capital costs for the cooling which is required in order to bring about the desired purification.
