Description
MENETELMÄ NIKKELILATERIITTIMALMIN KÄSITTELEMISEKSI KEKSINNÖN ALAMETHOD FOR THE TREATMENT OF NICKEL LATERITE ORITES FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a method for treating laterite ores such that the metals contained in the laterites are obtained in a water-soluble form for the recovery of precious metals such as nickel and cobalt. The various types of nickel platerites are treated simultaneously without being separated by their iron and / or magnesium content. When the laterites are pretreated with concentrated mineral acid so that the metals in the laterites react to their water-soluble salts, the silicates in the laterites partially decompose and the liquid-solids separation after dissolution becomes easier. According to the method, the water vapor generated during the ore and acid reaction step is utilized in the drying of the ore and the unreacted mineral acid is recycled to the beginning of the process.

KEKSINNÖN TAUSTABACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
US-patentissa 4125588 on kuvattu menetelmää, jossa nikkelilateriittimalmi esikäsitellään väkevällä hapolla ennen nikkelin liuotusta. Kuivattu malmi jauhetaan partikkelikokoon alueelle 65 - 100 mesh. Jauhettu malmi sekoitetaan väkevään happoon massasuhteessa noin 1:1. Metallien sulfatoitumisreaktiot käynnistetään lisäämällä lateriittia ja happoa sisältävään seokseen vettä 3 - 40% suhteessa lateriitin massaan. Sulfatoi-tuneet metallit liuotetaan veteen.U.S. Pat. No. 4,125,588 describes a process in which nickel plater ore is pretreated with concentrated acid prior to nickel leaching. In the method described, the laterite ore is dried so that the moisture content of the ore is less than 1%. The dried ore is ground to a particle size range of 65 to 100 mesh. The ground ore is mixed with concentrated acid in a weight ratio of about 1: 1. The sulfation reactions of the metals are initiated by adding water to the mixture containing laterite and acid in an amount of 3 to 40% relative to the mass of the laterite. The sulfated metals are dissolved in water.
25 US-patenttihakemuksessa 2006/0002835 on kuvattu menetelmää, jossa lateriittien liuotus tapahtuu kahdessa vaiheessa. Koboltin liukenemisen parantamiseksi liuotusvaiheeseen lisätään jotain sopivaa pelkistysainetta, kuten rikkidioksidia. Johtuen alistökiömetrisestä haponkäytöstä liuotuskäsittelyn alkuvaiheessa vain osa lateriitista liukenee. Menetelmässä joudutaan käyttämään huomattavan pitkiä viipymäaikoja liuotus-saostusvaiheeseen. ίο Menetelmän toimivuus edellyttää, että edellyttää, että lateriitissa on merkittävä osuus helposti liukenevaa saproliittista lateriittia, jolloin voidaan toimia ferriraudan saostusalueella.US Patent Application 2006/0002835 describes a process in which the dissolution of laterites occurs in two steps. In the first step, concentrated sulfuric acid is mixed with the laterite ore. In a second step, the ore / acid mixture is slurried in water and the mixture is dissolved to dissolve the nickel and cobalt. It is essential for the process that the amount of concentrated sulfuric acid used in the pretreatment is stoichiometric with respect to the non-ferrous metals in the ore but not to the iron. According to Example 5, the acid / ore ratio is 2 0.65. A small excess of acid is advantageous in that even a small amount of iron is solubilized because it causes maximum solubility of nickel and cobalt. The dissolution step of the process is carried out either at a temperature of 95 to 105 ° C or in an autoclave at a temperature of up to 150 ° C and a pressure of 5 to the saturated vapor pressure. To improve dissolution of the cobalt, a suitable reducing agent such as sulfur dioxide is added to the leaching step. Due to the use of sub-kemi-metric acid in the initial stage of the leaching treatment, only part of the laterite is dissolved. The process requires the use of remarkably long residence times for the dissolution-precipitation step. ίο The operation of the process requires the presence of a significant proportion of readily soluble saprolite laterite in the ferritic precipitation region.
US-patenttihakemuksen 2006/0002835 tekniikan tasossa on varsin 15 kattavasti kuvattu muita menetelmiä nikkelin ja muiden arvometallien talteenottamiseksi lateriiteista.Other processes for the recovery of nickel and other precious metals from laterites are quite well described in the state of the art in US patent application 2006/0002835.
Because the atmospheric leaching process results in very finely divided and gel-like leaching residues, separation and washing of the solid and solution are particularly demanding and present one of the major challenges to the processes. However, despite a number of process patents based on atmospheric leaching, due attention has not been paid to this problem. The difficulty of solid-liquid separation also varies considerably, depending on the type of laterite.

KEKSINNÖN TARKOITUSPURPOSE OF THE INVENTION
Esillä olevan keksinnön tarkoituksena on poistaa aikaisemmissa menetelmissä esiintyneitä ongelmia ja aikaansaada menetelmä lateriittien liuottamiseksi tavalla, jossa erityisesti kiintoaineen erotus liuoksesta ei aiheuta 30 ongelmia. Keksinnöllä pyritään lisäksi parantamaan lateriittiprosessin taloudellisuutta hyväksikäyttämällä reaktioissa syntyvää lämpöä sekä talteen ottamalla reaktioissa kulumaton happo.The object of the present invention is to eliminate the problems encountered in the previous processes and to provide a method for dissolving the laterites in a manner in which separation of the solid from the solution in particular does not cause any problems. The invention further seeks to improve the economy of the laterite process by utilizing the heat generated in the reactions and recovering the acid which is not consumed in the reactions.

44

Mineraalihappo on ainakin yksi 5 joukosta rikkihappo, typpihappo tai suolahappo tai vähintään kahden näiden seos. Mineraalihapon väkevyys on edullisesti luokkaa 70 - 98 p-%. Kun mineraalihappo on rikkihappo, reaktiovaihe on sulfatointi.In the acid treatment of the process, which includes an acid-ore mixing step and a reaction step, the metals of the laterite ore are made to form water-soluble salts of the mineral acid. The concentration of the mineral acid is preferably in the range of 70 to 98% by weight. When the mineral acid is sulfuric acid, the reaction step is sulfation.
Keksinnön mukaiselle menetelmälle on tyypillistä, että reaktiovaiheeseen ίο syötettyä hapon ja malmin seosta lämmitetään vaiheen alkuosassa. Menetelmässä hapon talteenottovaiheelle on tyypillistä, että reagoimatta jäänyt happo haihdutetaan happokäsitellystä lateriitista. Haihdutus tapahtuu esimerkiksi kuumentamalla happokäsitelty lateriitti hapon kiehumispisteeseen normaalissa paineessa tai käyttämällä alipainetta.It is typical of the process according to the invention that the mixture of acid and ore introduced into the reaction step ωο is heated at the beginning of the step. In the process, the acid recovery step is characterized in that the unreacted acid is evaporated from the acid-treated laterite. Evaporation occurs, for example, by heating the acid-treated laterite to the boiling point of the acid under normal pressure or by applying a vacuum.

According to a fourth embodiment of the invention, a neutralizing agent is introduced into the water-leaching step of the acid-treated material to precipitate iron as the hydroxide, while nickel and cobalt remain water-soluble salts. KEKSINNÖN YKSITYISKOHTAINEN SELOSTUSDETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In the process of the invention, all different types of nickel laterites, such as limonite, saprolite, and nontronite, or combinations thereof, are treated together with concentrated mineral acid (70-98%) so that the metals inside the laterites form water-soluble mineral acid salts. Although the laterite to be treated is composed of several different types of laterite, they are not distinguished in the process of the invention. The metals contained in the laterites are mainly nickel, cobalt, manganese, magnesium, aluminum, chromium and iron, of which 30 are mainly considered as nickel and cobalt. Mineral acid is essentially meant sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or nitric acid or a mixture thereof. For the sake of simplicity, sulfuric acid is discussed below, but the method is also applicable to other mineral acids. The terms sulfation and sulfated laterite are likewise used for the sake of simplicity, but are not intended to limit the use of the process of the invention by other acids.
55
Yleisesti lateriittien atmosfäärisessä liuotuksessa on neste-kiintoaine-erotus muodostunut ongelmaksi. Tämän keksinnön tarkoituksena on saada aikaan menetelmä, jonka neste/kiintoaine-erottumisominaisuudet ovat hyvät ja siten menetelmästä on mahdollista saada taloudellinen.In general, liquid-solid separation has become a problem in the atmospheric dissolution of laterites. It is an object of the present invention to provide a process having good liquid / solid separation properties and thus making the process economical.
1010
It is particularly important for the process that the mixing of the acid and the laterite can be performed under optimal conditions. In this case, it is essential that the laterite is dry and of sufficiently fine grain size. However, the level of grinding of the laterite is sufficient for the normal concentrate, i.e. the process does not require the actual fine grinding. If the grain size is too coarse, the acid will not penetrate into the laterite granules, which results in slow and often incomplete formation of water-soluble salts, in the case of sulfuric acid. The use of moist laterite, in turn, causes the sulfation reaction to be initiated due to the acid solvation heat, which makes it difficult to mix laterite and acid.
The method according to the invention is described below with reference to the diagram of Fig. 1. According to the method, laterite ore is crushed 90% to a grain size of less than 10 mm. The crushed ore is dried in drying step 1 using the water vapor generated in the sulfation reactions of the subsequent reaction step 4. The dried laterite ore is conducted to a dry milling step 2, where it is typically comminuted to a grain size of 90% to less than 500 µm, preferably 90% to less than 150 µm, for example using a ball mill.
After drying and grinding, the laterite is introduced into an acid treatment mixing step 3, where the laterite ore and concentrated sulfuric acid are homogeneously mixed in a suitable apparatus, such as a screw mixer, drum or other reactor. The acid is added in an amount such that it is at least stoichiometric to the metals in the laterite. The temperature of the mixing step is preferably adjusted to be below 100 ° C in order not to harden the resulting mixture and hinder further processing. The purpose is to operate at a temperature where sulfation does not yet occur.
After the mixing step, the mixture is transferred to reaction step 4, where the process temperature is initially raised by external heating, after which the reactions between the laterite and the acid begin to produce heat and the process is mainly autothermal. The reaction step takes place at ambient pressure and temperature of about 150-300 ° C. The heat can be increased during the early stages of the process, for example by internal or external heating, such as a burner, to enhance the desired chemical reactions. The temperature of the process can be up to a maximum boiling point of the acid, i.e. an operating temperature of less than 339 ° C for sulfuric acid. Laterites typically contain large amounts of crystalline water and, in addition, significant amounts of water are generated, for example, during sulphation reactions, which evaporate during heating. The resulting water vapor is recovered and utilized in drying laterite, as noted above. In the process of U.S. Patent 4,125,588, water is added to the sulfation step, but in the process of this invention, water is not added to the reaction step. Both the mixing and reaction steps, as well as the subsequent step leaching, all occur at ambient pressure, i.e. the system is atmospheric. The material resulting from the acid treatment is of a solid and powder nature and thus easy to handle.
Happoylimäärän käyttö lateriitin sisältämiin metalleihin nähden parantaa metallien saattamista vesiliukoiseksi suoloikseen (sulfatoitumista) ja täten parantaa metallien talteenottoastetta. Haittapuolena tällöin on happo- ja 30 neutralointikustannusten kasvu. Hapon kulutusta prosessissa pienennetään käyttämällä reagoimatta jääneen jäännöshapon kierrätystä. Jäännöshappo haihdutetaan happokäsitellystä lateriitista hapon talteenottovaiheessa 5.The use of excess acid relative to the metals contained in the laterite improves the rendering of the metals water-soluble salts (sulfation) and thus improves the metal recovery rate. The disadvantage here is an increase in acid and neutralization costs. The acid consumption in the process is reduced by recycling the unreacted residual acid. The residual acid is evaporated from the acid treated laterite in the acid recovery step 5.

Haihdutus tapahtuu esimerkiksi kuumentamalla happokäsitelty lateriitti hapon kiehumispisteeseen 339° C. Toinen vaihtoehto on käyttää alipainetta, jolloin hapon kiehumispiste on matalampi. Haihdutuksen jälkeen hapon annetaan jäähtyä ja tiivistyä nesteeksi, joka kierrätetään takaisin sekoitus-5 vaiheeseen 3.Evaporation occurs, for example, by heating the acid-treated laterite to an acid boiling point of 339 ° C. Another alternative is to use a vacuum, whereby the acid boiling point is lower. After evaporation, the acid is allowed to cool and condense to a liquid, which is recycled back to mixing step 3.
Kun lateriitti reagoi esimerkiksi rikkihapon kanssa, sitä voidaan kuvata seuraavilla yksinkertaistetuilla reaktioyhtälöillä: ίο 2 FeOOH + 3H2S04 => Fe2(S04)3 + 4H20 (1)When the laterite reacts, for example, with sulfuric acid, it can be described by the following simplified reaction equations: ωο 2 FeOOH + 3H2SO4 => Fe2 (SO4) 3 + 4H2O (1)
NiO + H2S04 => NiS04 + H20 (2) 2 CoOOH + 3 H2S04 => Co2(S04)3 + 4H20 (3)NiO + H2SO4 => NiSO4 + H2O (2) 2 CoOOH + 3 H2SO4 => Co2 (SO4) 3 + 4H2O (3)
Al203 + 3 H2S04 => AI2(S04)3 + 3H20 (4)Al 2 O 3 + 3 H 2 SO 4 => Al 2 (SO 4) 3 + 3 H 2 O (4)
MgO + H2S04 => MgS04 + H20 (5) 15 M20 + H2S04 => M2S04 + H20 (M = Na, K) (6)MgO + H 2 SO 4 => MgSO 4 + H 2 O (5) 15 M 2 O + H 2 SO 4 => M 2 SO 4 + H 2 O (M = Na, K) (6)
The process of the invention utilizes phenomena according to which the silicates contained in the laterites are partially dehydrated during the concentrated acid treatment and possibly also at higher temperatures. At the same time, their crystal structure is partially modified to facilitate the liquid-solid separation after leaching.
Kuvan 1 mukaisen happokäsittelyn ja hapon talteenottovaiheen jälkeen kiinteä hienojakoinen materiaali, joka sisältää hapon vesiliukoiset suolat, 25 johdetaan varsinaiseen liuotusvaiheeseen 6, missä kiintoaineeseen johdetaan vettä. Vesiliuotusvaihe tapahtuu atmosfäärisissä olosuhteissa eli lämpötilassa 80 -105° C ja ympäristön paineessa. Liuotusvaiheen kesto riippuu lateriittimalmin raekoosta ja koostumuksesta ja on tyypillisesti välillä 1 - 2 h.After the acid treatment of Figure 1 and the acid recovery step, a solid finely divided material containing water soluble salts of the acid is passed to the actual dissolution step 6 where water is introduced into the solid. The water leaching step takes place under atmospheric conditions, i.e. at a temperature of 80 to 105 ° C and at ambient pressure. The duration of the leaching step depends on the grain size and composition of the laterite ore and is typically between 1 and 2 h.
In the leaching step 6 of the acid-treated laterite ore, all the sulphated metals contained in the laterite are dissolved. In the alternative of Figure 1, iron is removed from the metal-containing solution, which is essentially trivalent 9 by neutralizing the solution in a neutralization step 7 with a suitable neutralizing agent, whereupon the iron precipitates but the nickel and cobalt salts remain water soluble. Preferred neutralizing agents are limestone and / or limestone milk whereby iron precipitates as hydroxide. If it is desired to precipitate iron, for example as jarosite, other known precipitating aids such as sodium sulfate are additionally used. At the same time, iron and most of the chromium are precipitated with iron, so they go into leaching waste.
After the water leaching step 6 and the neutralization 7, a solid separation is carried out, whereby the solid is separated from the liquid by typical separation techniques, such as thickening and / or filtration, to recover solids such as iron and silicates from the solution. All the dissolved metals, and especially the solution containing precious metals (PLS), are passed to the next step of the solution processing, where the dissolved ions can be effectively separated and led to the following process steps (not shown in detail). As noted above, in the laterite treatment of the invention, the structure of the silicates is altered such that solution-solid separation does not cause gelling and is thus easy to perform. It is thus typical of the process that, due to the properties of the leaching waste, the thickening and washing of the slurry can be carried out with significantly smaller equipment than, for example, after direct acid leaching. At the same time, the proportion of precious metals remaining in the final waste is also substantially reduced than in known methods.
Desirable precious metals such as nickel and cobalt are recovered from solution by known methods after precipitation of iron as the hydroxide, sulfide or carbonate, and are not shown in the Scheme. Typical chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide, sodium hydrogen sulfate, lime, magnesium hydroxide or sodium carbonate are used in the precipitation.
1010
Magnesiumin ja mangaanin poisto liuoksesta tapahtuu korkeassa pH-arvossa, tyypillisesti alueella 9 -11 käyttäen kalkkia tai vastaavia neutralointiaineita, jolloin Mg ja Mn saostuvat pääosin hydroksideina.Removal of magnesium and manganese from the solution occurs at high pH, typically in the range of 9 to 11, using lime or similar neutralizing agents, whereby Mg and Mn are mainly precipitated as hydroxides.
5 Kuvassa 2 on esitetty eräs toinen keksinnön mukainen vaihtoehto vesi-liuotusvaiheesta 6 tulevan sakan käsittelemiseksi. Menetelmän alkuvaiheet suoritetaan kuten edellä on kuvattu. Figure 2 shows another alternative of the invention for treating a precipitate from the water-leaching step 6. The initial steps of the method are carried out as described above. It is typical of this alternative that after leaching there is no liquid-solid separation at all, but the entire slurry is led to an ion exchange treatment 9 where valuable metals such as nickel and cobalt are recovered directly from the slurry by an ion exchange resin concept. after adsorption on the ion exchange resin, the resin is subjected to an elution step 10 where it is eluted with an acid or a similar eluent and the precious metal-containing elution solution is subjected to further treatment. The resin is recycled to the ion exchange step 15 9. The precious metals are recovered from the eluent solution by, for example, sulfide precipitation or liquid-liquid extraction, not described in more detail, the sludge from the ion exchange step containing iron and silicates is led to neutralization steps iron, aluminum, manganese and magnesium are precipitated out of solution.

Kuvassa 3 nähdään kolmas keksinnön mukainen vaihtoehto vesiliuotuksesta 6 tulevan sakan käsittelemiseksi. Halutut arvometallit, kuten nikkeli ja koboltti, otetaan talteen liuotusvaiheesta 6 tulevasta lietteestä sementointi-vaiheessa 11 sementoimalla ne sopivan karkeuden omaavalla rauta-25 jauheella, jolloin arvometallit jäävät rautajauheeseen. Tässäkään tapauksessa lietteelle ei suoriteta neste-kiintoaine-erotusta ennen arvometallien talteenottoa. Rautajauhe erotetaan lietteestä magneettisen erotuksen vaiheessa 12 esimerkiksi heikkomagneettisen erottimen avulla. Rauta-jauheen ja arvometallien seos johdetaan arvometallien liuotusvaiheeseen 13, 30 jossa seos liuotetaan hapolla ja liuos johdetaan jatkokäsittelyyn nikkelin ja koboltin talteenottamiseksi. Arvometallien sementoinnin yhteydessä syntyvä jäteliete, joka sisältää raudan ja silikaatit, johdetaan neutralointivaiheisiin, 11 joissa mm. rauta, alumiini, mangaani ja magnesium saostetaan pois liuoksesta.Figure 3 shows a third alternative embodiment of the invention for treating a precipitate from water 6. The desired precious metals, such as nickel and cobalt, are recovered from the slurry from leaching step 6 in the cementation step 11 by cementing them with iron powder of suitable coarseness, whereby the precious metals remain in the iron powder. Again, the slurry is not subjected to liquid-solid separation prior to recovery of the precious metals. The iron powder is separated from the slurry in step 12 of magnetic separation, for example by means of a weak magnetic separator. The alloy of iron powder and precious metals is passed to a precious metal leaching step 13 where the alloy is dissolved in an acid and the solution is subjected to further treatment to recover the nickel and cobalt. The sludge from the cementation of precious metals, containing iron and silicates, is led to neutralization steps 11 in which mm. iron, aluminum, manganese and magnesium are precipitated out of solution.
Loppuliuos on lähinnä vettä, joka voidaan kierrättää liuotusvaiheeseen (ei tarkemmin kuvassa).The process of the invention illustrated in Figure 1 can also be modified according to Figure 5, which shows that the water-leaching step 6 after the acid treatment can also be performed as a combined leaching step 14 where the acid-treated laterite ore is directly treated with neutralizing solution by adding the required amount of limestone. In this case, both the dissolution of the water-soluble salts of the laterite and the neutralization of the solution, and consequent iron precipitation, occur in the same step. In this alternative, only one solid-liquid separation step 15 is required, in which both the leaching residue and the gypsum and iron precipitate formed are separated from the solution. The PLS solution containing nickel and cobalt is subjected to further treatment, for example sulfide precipitation 16, and the final solution to magnesium and manganese removal step 15, where the metals are precipitated from the solution by neutralization. The final solution is essentially water that can be recycled to the leaching step (not shown in detail).
Figure 5 shows another alternative of the invention for further treatment of acid-20 treated laterite. After the acid recovery step 5, the material from the mixing and reaction steps is fed wholly or partly to the thermal treatment step 18, which may take place, for example, in a drum or fluidized bed furnace. The thermal treatment step requires thermal energy, for example obtained by burning coal. When the acid is 25 sulfuric acid, in the acid treatment, the iron of the laterite reacts to ferrous sulfate, which now decomposes in the thermal treatment to hematite and sulfur oxide. The sulfur oxide gases (SO 2 and SO 3) are further passed to the acid plant 19, whereupon the resulting acid is further recycled to the acid treatment step 3. The hematite-containing material is introduced into aqueous leaching 6, where nickel, cobalt and magnesium are dissolved and recovered. The free acid remaining in the acid-treated laterite can be evaporated as described previously before thermal decomposition. The advantages of the procedure are easy-to-handle waste material and reduced acid costs.

The following example illustrates the importance of the weight ratio of acid to laterite in nickel yield in leaching. As in Example 1, two otherwise similar experiments were performed, but the acid was used in ratios of 0.6 and 0.8 kg / kg of laterite. The amount of acid that did not pass in the treatment sulfation reactions was determined after titration with water by titrating the acid remaining in the solution. Table 8 shows the effect of acid to laterite on metal intake and the amount of unreacted acid. It can be seen from the table that the yields of metals clearly improve as the acid content increases with the mass of the laterite. This also increases the amount of unreacted acid. Result 15 shows that, for maximum nickel yield, the acid must be used in amounts approximately 1: 1 by weight to laterite. When the acid is recycled as disclosed in this invention, substantial cost savings are achieved in terms of acid consumption.
