Process whereby the waste is compacted, the compacted waste is placed in standard storage barrels made from steel sheet and the full storage barrels are stored at storage points. The waste is introduced into auxiliary steel-sheet barrels. Compacting is carried out with the auxiliary barrels in the form of moulded bodies with a steel jacket. A plurality of shaped bodies with a steel jacket is arranged in the storage barrels which are thereby simultaneously made more rigid. As a result, the radioactive waste is not loose in the storage barrels, the storage barrels are strengthened and substantially greater quantities of radioactive waste can be placed in the storage barrels and therefore at the storage points (Figure 4).
