Abstract

A falling film evaporator of the type in which the liq. to be evaporated flows down through vertical tubes grouped in a tube bundle between two horizontal tube plates. The bundle is enclosed within the evaporator vessel so that steam can be circulated between and around the tubes. Spaced above the upper tube plate is horizontal distributor plate with pipe stubs projecting down, one coaxial with and almost meeting the entry to each of the vertical tubes. The pipe stubs carry liq. from a supply tank, of which the distributor plate forms the base, into the tubes. Each pipe stub extends upwards above the level of liq. in the tank. Vertical slots in the wall of the pipe stub allow liq. to flow into the stub. The tubes are located to leave a path for steam entering the vessel to find its way into the tube bundle so that heat is distributed evenly to all tubes. This means that the pattern of pipe stubs in the distributor tank also leaves a path so that incoming liq. is evenly distributed to the stubs and hence the pipes.
