Abstract

A polymeric scavenger has a macro-reticulate polymer backbone, opt. of poly(styrene-divinyl benzene), having pendant aromatic gps. of Ar-CR1M-R2 where Ar = aromatic hydrocarbon contg. 1-3 rings; R1 and R2 = H, 1-13C alkyl, methylene bridged benzophenones or their alkali(ne) earth) metal salts, or methylene bridged fluorenones and their alkali(ne earth) metal salts; and M = Li, K, Na, 1-12C alkyl, Mg or 1-12C alkyl Zn. Opt. a finely divided hydride of the metal component of M can be dispersed in the pores of the polymer. Prepn. of this scavenger is also claimed comprising contacting the polymer with a metallating agent selected from 1-12C alkyl Li, 1-12C alkyl Na, 1-12C alkyl K, di(1-12C)alkyl Mg, 1-12C alkyl Mg halides and di(1-12C)alkyl Zn; alkali(ne earth) metal salts of benzophenone and alkali(ne earth) metal salts of fluorenone. A process for purifying fluids which are inert to the scavenger and which contain Lewis acid and oxidant impurities by contacting them with this scavenger is also claimed.
