Bis(polyhydroxyphenyl)methane derivs. of formula (I), are new. R = 1-20C alkyl or aryl; R1-R3 = H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, OH, OR4 or N(R4)2; R4 = 1-4C alkyl. Prodn. of a benzofuran deriv. of formula (II) comprises rearrangement of a bis-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methane deriv. of formula (III) by heating in presence of a (in)organic acid as catalyst, with removal of the prods. as they are formed. Ra = H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, OH, ORd or N(Rd)2; Rb = 1-6C alkyl, aryl or alkaryl; Rc = H or Rb; Rd = 1-4C alkyl.
