Abstract

Characters are printed on the paper (1) by the printing head (2) of a dot matrix or ink jet printer. The head also prints a predefined dot matrix test character (3) in a predetermined area of the left hand margin for each line of print. On each line shift the test character (3) is illuminated by a light emitting diode as it passes under a row of photo diodes that are arranged to read in turn each dot comprising the test character. - The number of dots registered by the diode sensing device is compared with the number of printing elements in the printing head and if there is a difference a signal circuit initiates an alarm.
