Abstract

Yarns which have been heat set and cooled are wound onto a spool by one of a plurality of winding units in a yarn separating device. The device has a central drive means which drives belts (28) to rotate cam rollers (36) each driving two winding units. These units, each of which includes a grooved friction drive roller (53) for feeding yarn onto a spool (58), are coupled to the cam roller by an eddy current coupling unit (45). This unit has two drive plates, one with a magnetic layer and the other with a current carrying layer, separated by a manually adjustable gap. By adjusting the gap, the torque imparted to the grooved cam roller can be varied to vary yarn tension. This tension/torque control mechanism permits yarn to be wound onto spools at a uniform tension. In the heat setting and cooling apparatus, yarns are deposited on a perforated conveyor belt and heated (for bulking) and cooled by air (Fig. 1, not shown).
