Abstract

Prodn. of title cpd. (I) comprises reacting ethylene with 4-bromobenzaldehyde in presence of base and a Pd cpd. as catalyst, the reaction being effected at an ethylene partial pressure of 0.01-1 (0.1-1) bar. - Pref. reaction is effected in presence of a mixt. of Pd acetate and tri-o-tolyl phosphine. Pref. catalyst is used in amt. 0.01-2 mol.% w.r.t. 4-bromobenzaldehyde. Pref. reaction is effected at 30-200 (80-150) deg.C and in the presence of an inert organic soln., compared with the reaction constituents. Pref. soln. used is cyclic or N,N disubstd. amide. - (I) can be used in the mfr. of known optical brighteners, see US4108887.(Dwg.0/0) EPAB- EP-104296 B A process for the preparation of stilbene-4,4'-dialdehyde by reacting ethylene with 4-bromobenzaldehyde in the presence of a base and of a palladium compound as catalyst, which process comprises performing the reaction under an ethylene partial pressure in the range from 0.01 to 1 bar. (5pp) USAB- US4579975 A Prepn. of stilbene-4,4'-dialdehyde comprises reaction of ethylene (0.1-1.0 bar) with 4-bromobenzaldehyde in the presence of a tert. amine, pref. tert. amines or alkylenediamines, and a Pd(II) salt or Pd(O)-tert.phosphine complex (0.004-0.05 mol% based on the bromoaldehyde) in an inert solvent (pref. cyclic or N,N-disubstd. amide) at 80-150 deg.C. Pref. catalyst is a mixt. of Pd(OAc)2 and y(po tri(2-tolyl)phosphine.
