SE HACE REACCIONAR FENILHIDRAZINA O SUS SALES, CON UREA O CON CIANATOS DE METALES ALCALINOS O DE AMONIO; SE OBTIENE FENILSEMICARBAZIDA QUE SE CICLIZA MEDIANTE ACIDO FORMICO. DICHA CICLIZACION SE REALIZA EN PRESENCIA DE UN ACIDO INORGANICO U ORGANICO FUERTE O DE UN HALOGENURO O ANHIDRIDO DEL MISMO. COMO ACIDOS PUEDEN EMPLEARSE EL CLORHIDRICO, EL FOSFORICO, EL CLOROSULFONICO O EL PARA-TOLUENOSULFONICO, A CONCENTRACIONES DE 0,05 A 0,5 MOLES POR CADA MOL DE SEMICARBAZIDA. LA CICLIZACION TIENE LUGAR EN UN DISOLVENTE INERTE TAL COMO EL AGUA.
