Abstract

The wheel (5) is produced as an integral product to close tolerances by shaping under pressure a semi-solid metal alloy charge in a die (1, 2, 3,4). The metal alloy charge contains discrete degenerate dendritic primary solid particles suspended homogeneously in a secondary liquid phase having a lower melting point than said primary solid particles. The wheel possesses properties approaching those of wrought products with the relatively complex configuration typical of castings. The alloy charge is placed in a cavity defined by die parts 2, 3, 4 and die part 1 is rapidly lowered to shape the wheel.
