Abstract

A tanker for liquefied petroleum gases carries in its hold spherical tanks which rest with a flat bottom on an insulating layer. Several tongue and groove elements are arranged in a circular band around the equator to absorb merely the radial expansion/contraction and lateral movements but no vertical forces. This is an inexpensive way of absorbing expansion/contraction movements of tanks filled with cryogenic fluid. The weight of the tank is transmitted directly to the ship's hull.
