Abstract

Coupling between a matrix polymer and a particulate filler is improved by incorporating a coupling agent consisting of an organosilicon cpd. having an organic molecular chain structure with >=1 silyl group contg. 2 (opt. substd.) alkoxy groups. Pref. cpds. contain a silyl group -SrRX2 in which R is 1-4c alkyl, esp. methyl, and X is opt. substd. alkoxy. The coupling agents are esp. useful for use with Si-contg. fillers usch as SiO2 in a matrix polymer e.g. of a sulphur vulcanised natural or synthetic rubber. The couplers promote homogeneous mixing of the components and generally lower the viscosity of the mixt., so that mixing times are reduced and less energy is expended on the mixing stage. Due to the coupling action of the additives, the vulcanised prods. have imporved elasticity, tensil strength and moudlus of elasticity and a smaller elongation at break than similar prods. made without the silylated polymer additives.
