Abstract

A steering wheel for a vehicle is designed for adequate strength for normal use, combined with maximum protection of the driver from injury in the event of an impact. The flexible rim is attached to a central core which is pot shaped and has a conical flexible portion (46) which is closed and filled with a phenolic reson foam ro similar hard and fragile foam material. The base part, which may be cup shaped, or a corrugated sleeve (4c) is also soft. The sloping part may be formed in steps. the top of this portion can carry a cylindrical air cushion (4a) which may have a set of air outlet slits (4e) around its side.
