Procedure for preparing water-soluble disazo dyes which, in the form of the free acid, have the general formula: ** (See formula) ** where A represents the residue of a diazo component of the benzene or naphthalene series, N represents an optionally substituted 1,4-arylene radical and each radical T and Z, independently, represents an optionally substituted alkyl or aralkyl radical, provided that that at least one of the T and Z radicals contains more than 4 carbon atoms; characterized in that it comprises diazotizing an aromatic amine ANH2, coupling the diazo compound thus obtained with an aromatic amine MNH2, and then diazotizing the resulting monoazo amino compound and coupling the diazo compound with a coupling component of the formula: ** (See formula) ** wherein A, M, T, and Z are defined as above, the two amines and the coupling components together containing a total of two sulfonic acid groups.
