A process for the preparation of ethylene oxide by direct oxidation of ethylene with molecular oxygen in the presence of a silver-containing catalyst, characterized in that the process is carried out in the presence of a silver catalyst containing from 0.00035 to 0 0.0030 gram equivalents by weight, based on the total catalyst, of potassium, rubidium and/or cesium, which have been simultaneously deposited with silver on the support.
