Abstract

A process for the preparation of [1-hydroxy-5-indanoyloxy (or indanoylthio)]-alkanecarboxylic acids of the formula < IMAGE > the compounds being obtained by introducing the radical Y-C(O)-OH into corresponding 5-hydroxy- or 5-mercapto-1-indoles by reaction with a halogenoalkanoic acid or an ester thereof, is described. If an ester is used, the latter must be converted to the free acid by hydrolysis. The preparation of the esters, amides and salts of the resulting compounds of the formula (I) is also described. The compounds prepared exhibit a high therapeutic activity and can in particular be used in diuretic and saluretic agents.
