Abstract

A filter device for downward filtration, which has a bed that is composed of particles of three or more different materials of different densities from each other and that is capable of being established in layers of successively increasing density in the downward direction, fluidizing the particles and allowing them settling under the action of gravity, in which: (a) the particles of the least dense material form the upper layer and are substantially the same size as each other, (b) the particles of the next less dense material form the layer immediately below the upper layer and are substantially the same size as each other, but smaller than the particles of which the upper layer is composed; (c) the lowest layer is of the densest material, and the largest particles are of such a size that they do not block, or pass through, the passages through which the liquid leaves the bed, during the use of the filter, and (d) from the smallest particles in the bed to the particles in the bottom of the bed, there are particles of many different sizes, these particles adopting (after fluidization) an order in which the particle size gradually increases in a downward direction from the smaller bedding particles.
