Abstract
A procedure for the preparation of an azetidinol derivative of the general formula **(See formula)** wherein R represents an alcohol or aralcohyl group and Z is a hydrogen atom or a protecting group attached to the oxygen atom by an aliphatic ether bond, which comprises reacting a compound of the formula **(See formula)** at X it represents a halogen atom or a reactive ester moiety and Za is as defined above with respect to the protecting group Z, with a primary amine of the formula **(See formula)** wherein R is as defined above, to form a 1-substituted azetidinol derivative of the formula **(See formula)** wherein R and Za are as defined above, and, if desired, cleaving the protecting group Za from the thus formed azetidinol derivative of formula (I-b) by a method known per se.
