Procedure for the preparation of water soluble monoazo dyes of the general formula (1) **(See formula)** in which A signifies a lower alcohol group, a carboxyl group or a lower alkoxycarbonyl group, B signifies a radical from the series of benzene or naphthalene, which can carry one or more usual substituents in water-soluble azo dyes, of which - if neither A nor Z are water-solubilizing groups- at least one is a water-solubilizing substituent, X means the group -CH = CH2 or the group -CH2-CH2-Z, where Z represents a hydroxyl group or an organic or inorganic radical capable of be separated in an alkaline medium, characterized in that naphthylamines of the general formula (2) are diazotized **(See formula)** where X has the meanings mentioned above, and are coupled with coupling components of the general formula (3) **(See formula)** wherein A and B have the meanings mentioned above, and the dyes of formula (1) thus obtained, optionally, a) in the case where X represents the grouping of the formula -CH2-CH2-OH, are transformed according with procedures known per se in dyes of the formula (1), in which X represents the grouping of the formula -CH2-CH2-Z, where Z represents an organic or inorganic radical capable of being separated in an alkaline medium, or b) in the case where X represents the grouping of the formula -CH2-CH2-Z, where Z means a hydroxyl group or an organic or inorganic radical capable of being separated in alkaline medium, they are transformed according to the procedure per se known in colorants of the formula (1), in which X represents the vinyl radical; or c) in the case where X represents the vinyl radical, they are transformed according to per se known procedures into dyes of formula (1), in which X represents the group beta-thio-sulfate-ethyl or beta-dialcolhilamino -ethyl.
