Abstract
The turbine wheel 18 of an hydraulic coupling is connected to an output shaft 20 by a ratchet clutch 19 comprising an intermediate ring 26 helically splined at 27, 28 to a hub 22 of the turbine wheel 18 and carrying clutch teeth 31 engageable with teeth 32 on the output shaft 20. Helical movement of the ring 26 to engage the teeth 31 synchronously with the teeth 32 is initiated by a pawl 33 engageable with the teeth 31. The clutch 19 may be held engaged for bi-directional drive by a piston 34 splined at 42 to the hub 22 and engageable with teeth 44 on the ring 26. The piston 34 is biased towards engagement with the teeth 44 by a spring 45 and is moved left against the bias of the spring 45 by supplying pressure liquid to a chamber 39. In a motor vehicle transmission system, Fig. 6, pressure liquid is supplied to the chamber 39 from a pump 52 through a valve 48 when a gear shift lever switch 56 is closed. The clutch 19 is thus normally held engaged for bidirectional drive by the piston 34 and is released for one way drive during ratio shift. A centrifugally controlled valve 57 vents the fluid coupling at engine idle. In Fig. 7 (not shown), a piston (60) acts on the intermediate ring (26) to disengage the clutch at engine idle. In Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the pawls (33) are carried by the intermediate ring and engage the teeth on the output shaft.
