Abstract

A system for rapidly charging batteries comprising sealed cells is arranged so that the batteries are charged during intervals interspersed with discharging intervals. A battery 41 is charged from an A.C. source 75 by way of a transformer 71, a half wave rectifier 81 and a rotary switch 21. The movable arm 33 of the switch is rotated at constant speed by a motor 89, the arm 33 moving successively from an OFF contact 39 to a contact 31 when the battery discharges through a resistor 29 and then to a contact 19 when the battery charges from the A.C. source, the charging current being limited by a resistor 83. During the discharge periods the battery, in a given instance, may discharge up to 20% of the battery capacity and during the charge periods may charge up to 55% of the battery capacitor. If desired the switch 21 may be provided with uniform segments and the rotary arm 33 moved in a timed sequence.
