Abstract

A yarn traversing mechanism comprises a first traversing device in the form of a reciprocable thread guide, and a second traversing device in the form of a rotatable thread guide which is arranged exclusively in the region of the two ends of the traverse, stroke, the first and second traverse motion devices being driven synchronously with each other but independently of the package. In Fig. 2 the first traversing device comprises a reciprocable thread guide 16 traversed by a threaded roller 1 and just before the guide 16 reaches the end of its traverse the yarn is caught up by an end 39 of a thread guide groove 6, 7 of a second traversing device 4, 5 and is temporarily removed from the guide 16 whilst it is reversed. By the time the second traversing device 4, 5 returns the yarn to the roller 1 the guide 16 is once again in a position to receive the yarn. In this embodiment the second traversing means 4, 5 are co-axial with the thread roller 1 and each includes a slot which has an increased angle of inclination 11 in the region just after its reversal point 10. The guide 16 slides between fixed guide rails 18. The thread roller 1 and the second traversing means 4, 5 are mounted on a common shaft 12. The package may be driven by a separately mounted drum (8) Fig. 1 (not shown). In Fig. 3 (not shown) the traverse means 4, 5 are mounted on a drive shaft (25) arranged with its axis parallel to that of the roller 1. In Fig. 6 the first traverse means is a threaded roller 1 in which a thread guide 16 slides. The second traverse motion comprises thread guide means 28, 29 in which thread guide grooves 30 and 31 are cut. A package drive roller 33 on a drive shaft 32 is positioned between the guide means 28, 29. The guide means 28, 29 are rotatable on the shaft 32 and geared to the shaft 12 of the roller 1. In this embodiment the thread remains permanently in the guide 16 but during the period that the guide reverses its direction of motion the thread enters groove 30 or 31 to be guided by said groove pending reversal of the guide 16. Fig. 7 (not shown) shows a transmission (41) that continuously varies the speed of rotation of the roller 1 about a mean value, the drive roller (8) for the package being driven via the transmission (41) at a constant speed. Fig. 8 shows a drive arrangement comprising a common source of alternating current 42, a synchronous motor 43 driving the package drive roller 8, and a rotary transformer 44 that energizes the synchronous motor 45 driving the threaded roller 1. This causes the roller 1 to vary its speed continually about a mean valve whereby ribbon winding is avoided.
