Abstract

The apparatus for controlling the movement of the print carriage of a printer forming the subject of Specification 1,145,035 is modified by the provision of means whereby the stored instructions for each print line contain a further instruction giving the line spacing the instructions being read out of corresponding storage positions in synchronism with the movement of the carriage means being responsive to the line spacing instructions for controlling the line spacing. The printer is described in more detail in Specification 1,240,296. The carriage is moved by a stepping motor 22 controlled as described in Specification 1,240,295. The store consists of a group of six 1-bit stores for each line. There may be 140 such groups read out in turn. The line spacing instruction comprises a flag-bit in the top portion of the group. If this is present a latch 188 is set if it is not latch 188 remains unset. When latch 188 is unset counter 130 is reset to " 0 " through gates 192a and 130d. The counter then counts 8 pulses for a line advance. This represents 6 lines per inch. If latch 188 is set the counter 130 is reset to " 2 " via gates 192b and 130d. The counter then fixes the line advance at 6 pulses representing a line spacing of 8 lines per inch.
