Abstract

Curved, e.g. V-shaped, safety windscreens are made by individually press bending each of two glass sheets and then laminating the sheets together with an intermediate transparent plastics material. After the press bending, one of the glass sheets may be strengthened, e.g. by thermal tempering or by chemical exchange of Na+ ions in the surface by the larger K+ ions, coated along a marginal region with a metal oxide or tinted before being laminated to an untreated glass sheet. The glass sheets are either laminated to an intermediate sheet of plasticized polyvinyl butyral at 190-325 F. under 100-250 p.s.i. pressure for sufficient time to render the plastic sheet transparent or a liquid polyurethane composition is cast between the glass sheets and maintained at 200-300 F. for at least hour until polyurethane sets to a transparent sheet. Silicones may also be used to laminate the sheets.
