Abstract

A gate valve comprises at least one disc 5 that is pressed against a seat 3a in the closed position to seal the valve and a movable, bridging member 14, having a hole 15 that locates on a pin 16 to prevent the seat 3a deflecting under sealing pressure. In Fig. 1, two discs 15 are forced apart by fluid supplied through a coiled pipe 13, and the disc is moved by fluid-actuated bellows 10, or a screw mechanism. In Figs. 3 to 5, not shown, elements (17a), (17b) cooperate with pins (16a), (16b), respectively, and are mounted on oppositely handed screw threads which can be rotated by links (19), (20), (21) to force the seats together. In Figs. 6 and 7, not shown, each seat carries a half-nut (22a), (22b) which co-operates with a oppositely handed screw 23, that can be rotated by a worm (25) and wheel (24), Fig. 8, not shown. Each seat can have a projection formed as a half truncated-conical bearing which locate in a conical recess in a member to prevent deflection of the seats. The pins 16 may be located on the bridging member. Two or three bridging members can be disposed at 60 or 45 degrees, spacing respectively.
