Abstract

Ascorbic acid is obtained by heating with a cation exchange resin a solution of a 2 - ketohexonic acid, an ester thereof or an acetal or ketonacetal derivative thereof. In examples ascorbic acid is obtained by heating diacetone- 2 - keto - 1 - gulonic acid in water and in ethyl alcohol and 2 - keto - 1 - gulonic acid in tert. butyl alcohol and in dioxane, the solutions being in contact with cation exchange resins.
