Abstract

In a rotary folding apparatus comprising a transfer cylinder 12, a folding cylinder 14 provided with grippers 16 for gripping and taking over bundles of collected newspaper sheets from the transfer cylinder the folding cylinder is arranged to be rotated at a peripheral speed less than that of the transfer cylinder. The folding cylinder is provided with gear driven folding blades 25 which push the bundles into the bite of rollers 19. The transfer cylinder may be arranged to deliver for a further folding cylinder 15 also arranged to be rotated at a reduced peripheral speed. As shown, webs 5 printed at stations 1, 2 and 3 are longitudinally slit, folded on former plates 4, Fig. 1, and drawn together by feed rollers 6. The associated webs are cut by cylinders 7 and 8 (57 and 58, Fig. 5) and the resulting sets of sheets are collected to form bundles on a cylinder 10 (59, Fig. 5). The bundles, now forming complete newspapers, are transferred to transfer cylinder 12, Fig. 2 (63, Fig. 6) and folded by the cylinders 14 and 15, Fig. 2 (50, Fig. 5 or 61, 62, Fig. 6). The folded bundles are collected on rotary members 21, 22 and delivered on belts 23, 24, Fig. 2 (67 and 68, Fig. 6).
