A metallic container 1, e.g. of tin or aluminium, having an annular rib 3, is sealed by a membrane 4, e.g. of metal, scored underneath at 5, and a tight fitting plastics cover 2 having projections 7. Upon removing, inverting and replacing the cover 2, its centrally bulged part 6 distends the membrane 4 downwards and the projections 7 pierce the membrane above the scoreline 5. Rotation of the cover 2 severs the membrane 4 which falls and rests upon a collar 3a, or is prevented from falling by adhesive on the cover 2 or on itself, or by a suction cup on, or recessed in, the cover. The cover 2 may house a spoon, Fig. 2 (not shown), or a predetermined quantity of a substance to be mixed with the container's contents. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the cover 2 is fitted outside the container 1 by means of a downward extension to an annular projection 2b, the inner flange 2a being omitted.
