Abstract

A devise for gauging the internal and external surfaces of a hemisphere 14 comprises a stationary frame 24, an external gauge 16 and an internal gauge 18 pivotally mounted on the frame for synchronized rotational movement about an axis 22, a table 12 for supporting the hemisphere and a mechanism for displacing the table in two directions at right angles. A plate 10, which carries the table 12, rests on a ring 30 and the height of the plate may be adjusted by screwing or unscrewing the ring on a threaded ring 34 attached to the frame. The plate 10 is centred by centering a collar 32 using two screws 38 so that the vertical axis of the collar intersects the axis 22. The position of the table 12 is adjusted by two micrometer screws 46 located in the frame at 90 degrees apart, one of the screws lying in a plane at right angles to the axis 22. Each screw 46 abuts a spring loaded stop 50 in a bore of the table 12, one end of the spring 52 engaging a cup 54 fixed to the frame. A link 40 pivotally couples the table 12 to the plate 10. To centre the table, a calibration ring 58 is placed on the table and the micrometer 16 is rotated to locate the outer surface of the ring at diametrically opposite points. The difference between the micrometer readings at these points is halved and the screw 46 adjusted by this amount. The plate 10 and table 12 are then rotated through 90 degrees and the adjustment is repeated until the axis of the ring coincides with the axis of the gauges 16, 18. The ring 58 is then replaced by the hemisphere 14 mounted on a support 56 and tests of the radius and thickness of the hemisphere along great meridian circles are made by rotating the gauges 16, 18. The gauge 16 is secured to a frame 59 fixed to a pinion 66. A dial 61 and a pointer 62 indicate the orientation of the gauge 16 and pinions 68, 72, 74 ensure synchronized rotation of the gauge 18. Play in the pinions is taken up by a spring 76, a chord 78 and a pulley 80. Inspection of the hemisphere around circles parallel to its equational plane is made by rotating the table 12 and the plate 10.
