Abstract

A naphtha feedstock, i.e. one having a B.R. up to 270 C., is steam reformed over a catalyst bed which has a temperature ranging from below 650 C. at the inlet to above 700 C. at the outlet to produce a lean fuel gas or synthesis gas. At least that portion of the bed up to 650 C. is a Ni or Co catalyst of high activity, i.e. it is more active by a factor of at least 1À5 than the catalyst described in Specification 1,003,702, and contains less than 0.5% W/W of alkali metal compounds (calculated as equivalent K 2 O), and this portion of the bed has a hydrocarbon LHSV of less than 4. The first catalyst portion may include a Pt group metal, a promoter, e.g. a compound of Be or Mg, an alkaline earth metal compound, uranium oxide, and Cu with or without Cr and/or Mn. Alumina is the preferred support, with less than 20% b.w. silica and a pore radius of at least 500 . The second catalyst portion may be the same as the first portion. If an oxo-synthesis gas is desired, CO 2 may be included in the steam fed to the reaction.
