Abstract

A water settable polyester/inorganic hydraulic filler composition comprises a polymerizable unsaturated polyester, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable therewith, an inorganic hydraulic filler which after having been stirred with water exhibits or induces an alkaline reaction and sets to a solid mass, a water-soluble free radical forming polymerization initiator which is substantially insoluble in the monomer and/or the polyester and which will not initiate polymerization in the substantial absence of water but which becomes active under aqueous alkaline conditions and 0-1 to 20% by weight in relation to the combined weight of the polyester and unsaturated monomer of a compound having at least one carboxylic acid or anhydride group and a C 10 -C 60 aliphatic and/or alicyclic group containing unsaturation capable of being oxidized in air at room temperature (i.e. 13-25 C.) or a salt thereof in which the positive ion does not promote the activity of the polymerization initiator. Preferred hydraulic fillers are Portland cement, ferro-Portland cement, blast furnace cement (slag cement), high alumina cement (cement de la Farge), lime-pozzolana cement, natural cements which are employed in admixture with quicklime and the hydraulic limes and Roman cement.
