Abstract

Random copolymers of butadiene-1,3, or isoprene with styrene made by continuously copolymerizing the monomers in solution using a lithium hydrocarbyl compound and (1) maintaining the composition of the reactants constant, (2) maintaining the ratio by weight of the diene and styrene between 90/10 and 55/45, (3) maintaining an average time of reactants inside the reaction zone of less than 2 hours, and (4) keeping the monomer concentration of the reacting mixture in the zone to less than 3% wt., and (5) the polymer concentration between 5 and 25% by weight. The mix leaving the reaction zone may be fed to another reactor in which any unconverted monomer is polymerized, e.g. to form polystyrene blocks at the end of the random copolymer chains. The copolymerization is conventional, and the copolymers recovered by steam treatment after addition of an antioxidant. The copolymers may be sulphur vulcanized.
