Abstract

The invention comprises reactive dyes containing at least one group of formula wherein A is -SO 2 - or -CO-, B is CH 3 , CH 3 O or a halogen atom, Y is a 2-sulphatoethyl or vinyl group, n and m are 0 or 1, the reactive groups being attached to an aryl nucleus of the dye directly or through a sulphamyi group. The dyes specified are of the monoazo, metallized azo, anthraquinone, xanthene and phthalocyanine series. The dyes are prepared by (i) reacting a compound of the formula given above wherein -CH 2 NHCO- is replaced by XCH 2 NHCO- and Y is -CH 2 CH 2 OH, X being a halogen atom or hydroxy group, with an organic dye having a substitutable hydrogen atom in an aryl nucleus or sulphamyl group, in H 2 50 4 , or (ii) reacting the organic dye with a compound wherein -CH 2 NHCO- is replaced by -CN or NH 2 CO- and Y is -CH 2 CH 2 OH in the presence of formaldehyde in H 2 SO 4 . The 2-sulphatoethyl group in the dyes obtained may be converted to vinyl by the action/of aqueous alkali.
