Abstract

A starting device for a single-phase A.C. motor 3 comprises a bimetal switch 7 in series with the auxiliary winding 5, the switch being kept open by an additional heater consisting of a resistor 13 of high positive temperature coefficient. The switch has one or two strips of bimetal 9, 12 initially heated by the current in the auxiliary winding when the switch opens this current flows through the P.T.C. resistor, rapidly heating it and so reducing the current, the heat keeping the contacts open. In alternative constructions (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), the P.T.C. resistor is a block of material to which the bimetal strips are directly attached, e.g. by sintering, and in one case there is a single bimetal strip, semicircular at the top, so that when the switch opens this part rapidly cools, thereby increasing the gap.
