Abstract

A tachogenerator, e.g. for a motor vehicle, comprises a stator 9, Fig.1 of insulating material mounted on a fixed shaft 4 and provided on its periphery with a printed or wire coil 3 or (11), Fig.2 (not shown). The rotor is formed by at least one disc 2 of magnetizable material provided with axially magnetized areas, Figs. 3a, 3b (not shown), around its periphery. As the rotor rotates the coil cuts across the magnetic fields between the magnetized areas and a corresponding annular member (10, 8 of magnetizable material which latter may also be provided with correspondingly located magnetized areas. Pulses are thus generated in the coil 3 or (11), whose repetition frequency is proportional to the speed of rotation of the shaft and which are fed to an appropriately calibrated matter 7. To provide a D.C. Output the areas on each stator are magnetized in the same direction, Fig. 3a (not shown). To provide an A.C. output adjacent areas are magnetized in opposite directions, Fig. 3b (not shown). To measure the number of revolutions performed, indicative of the distance travelled by the vehicle, as well as the speed of revolution, using a rotor of the type shown in Fig. 3a, one area of the rotor is magnetized in the opposite direction to the rest, Fig.4 (not shown), to provide one pulse per revolution of opposite polarity. The output from the coil 3 or (11) is then supplied to the bases of two transistors 14, 15, Fig. 5, one 14, which conducts when a positive pulse is applied and the other 15 when a negative pulse is applied to the base. A voltmeter 7 indicating speed of revolution and an electromagnetic counter or stepping motor and counter indicating the number of revolutions performed are connected in the emitter, collector circuits of the transistors respectively. Alternatively two separate systems of magnetized areas, radially displaced, each with its associated pick-up coil may be used to measure speed of revolution and number of revolutions independently. In a further embodiment a magnet (19), Fig. 6 (not shown) mounted on the end of a pivotal arm co-operating with a cam (23) is moved radially once per revolution of the rotor to produce a pulse in an associated coil (21) on the stator. In this embodiment the two systems are again independent.
