Abstract

In a continuous casting installation for producing cast strands of different cross-sections and using a universal starter bar comprising a head 7 suitable for the cross-section of the strand to be cast and a body 6, the extraction cage 2 includes fixed rollers 16, adjustable rollers 17 and the bottom roller 19 on the inside of the curve through which the strand 1 is passed is controlled by an hydraulic jack 20 having an adjustable stop. The stop is adjusted so that when the thin section of the starter bar body 6 has passed through the extraction cage the roller 19 is moved outwards on to its stop to allow the head 7 of the starter bar and the strand 1 to pass through the cage 2, and the stop takes the reaction of an hydraulic jack controlled roller 3 that curves the strand 1 to direct it to a radial guide 4 and straightening cage 5. The roller 3 also acts to separate the starter bar from the strand 1 by initially positioning the starter bar between the roller 3 and a guide 30 when the roller 3 is in the position indicated at 31 and retracting the ram 29 of the hydraulic jack 28 at the appropriate time when the strand 1 is supported by a flat stop 27. The starter bar is raised and lowered in a carriage 10 within a fixed basket 8 by a cable 12 attached to a drum 11 of a winch. The operation of the installation may be under automatic and remote control and may include a television camera.
