Abstract
Steel sheet or strip is heated to a temperature above 740 C. and is then rapidly quenched in a liquid to a temperature below 350 C. while passing between rotatable members which remove gas or vapour from the surface of the steel and bring quenching liquid substantially free from gas or vapour into contact with the steel. As shown in Fig. 1, strip 11 passes from furnace 1 through slot 13 into vapour chamber 15 into which coolant is continuously circulated through manifolds 9. The strip continues between rotating brush rolls 23 which may be formed from nickel-silver wire and may be centre-fed with coolant through hollow shafts. In a modified form of the apparatus, the brush rolls 23 are replaced by a series of solid rolls through which the strip passes, the roll gap of each pair being such as to provide clearance for the strip only.
