Abstract

A tube mill has at least two compartments 5, 16 separated by an internally hollow ring 8 presenting a sieve face to each compartment, so that ground material may pass from each compartment into the hollow ring for discharge from the mill. As described, the ring 8 has central hole 11 and rims 26 joined by radial bars 9, Fig. 2 (not shown), with the spaces spanned by sieve plates. Outlet openings 13 are made in the mill shell around the area closed by the ring 8, and this part of the mill is surrounded by a casing 14 having a slurry outlet 15. There are provided lifters 7 in the internal wall of the mill, lifters 17 on the side of the ring facing the inlet and lifters 22 on the end face 21. In operation, water is introduced via a pipe 4 and additional water through a trunnion 19 by a pipe 27. Solid materials are washed and partially ground in the first compartment to form a slurry, adequately fine material passing through the sieves 10 into the outlet channel constituted by the interior 12 of the ring, and thence to the outlet 15. Coarser material passes through the ring into the compartment 16 and is autogeneously ground and freed of all washable particles. The fluidity of the slurry is increased by additional water supplied by the pipe 27 and passes out of the compartment via the sieves in the ring 8. The material resistant to grinding passes from the mill by an outlet trunnion 19. Where the mill is provided with several compartments, more than one hollow ring may be used to provide adequate outlet for the slurry.
