A process for the production of phosphoric acid, in which tricalcium phosphate is reacted with phosphoric acid to produce monocalcium phosphate, and said monocalcium phosphate is reacted with sulfuric acid to form solid calcium sulfate hemihydrate and phosphoric acid, being separated by filtering the latter products, characterized by the improvements of reacting finely divided tricalcium phosphate with excess phosphoric acid, at a temperature between about 70 and about 80º C, to thereby form a suspension of digestion of monocalcium phosphate in said acid, introducing it into a suspension of formation of nuclei of hemihydrate of calcium sulfate and monocalcium phosphate in phosphoric acid, adding sulfuric acid to said suspension of formation of nuclei at a suitable speed to supply sulfuric acid in an amount corresponding to between 50 and 85% of the stoichiometric equivalent of the monocalcium phosphate introduced into said digestion suspension, removing said core formation suspension and introducing it into a reaction suspension of calcium sulfate hemihydrate in phosphoric acid, adding sulfuric acid to said reaction suspension at a suitable rate to supply acid sulfuric acid in an amount corresponding substantially to the stoichiometric equivalent of the monocalcium phosphate introduced into said core formation suspension, removing said reaction suspension, filtering said withdrawn reaction suspension, and recovering therefrom a filtrate consisting essentially of phosphoric acid.
