Process for preparing a polyhydroxypolyoxyalkylene ether, starting from starch, by reacting starch with an alcohol containing at least 2 hydroxyl groups, in the presence of an acid catalyst, at high temperature, and oxyalcohilating the resulting reaction mixture with an alkylene oxide, to produce an oxyalcohilated product, wherein the ratio of alcohol to starch is at least 0.5 moles of alcohol per weight of the glucose unit of the starch; process which is characterized by the improvement of adding to said oxyalcohlyl product more additional starch, a catalytic proportion of an acid catalyst, and more additional alcoholic oxide, the proportion of said starch being sufficient to increase the ratio between the total weight of units of glucose from the starch and the alcohol to at least 2: 1, and the proportion of the oxide of the alcohol being sufficient to produce a polyhydroxypolyoxyalkylene ether having a hydroxyl number of between about 30 and about 800.
