Abstract

A gas-fired water heater comprises an open shell 1 into which the gas burners 2 fire. A finned heat-exchanger incorporating flattened horizontal sinuous central heating and domestic draw off water pipes 6, 7, respectively is situated at the top of shell 1. By-passes 11, ha, 12 and 12a from the pipes 4, (4a), (5) and 5a supplying water to and delivering water from the heat exchanger are arranged along the sides of the shell 1 to cool it, the pipes 4, (4a), (5) and 5a including Venturi sections such as 9 and 10a to increase the cooling water flow through the bypasses. The fins on the pipes 6 and 7 may be at least partly replaced, by U- or V-shaped metal strips between them.
