Automatic brake adjuster, for a drum brake having a stationary housing member that includes a plunger assembly slidably mounted in said housing for applying the brake, said plunger assembly comprising a non-rotating adjusting screw and a rotary member secured to a thread in said adjusting screw and a detent element operatively connected to one of said members for movement hinged therewith and urged into engagement with a ratchet element functionally connected to the other of said members for rotation and/or relative rotation with the same, said fastener element disposed with respect to said ratchet element so as to communicate a rotating force on it after the normal return movement of said plunger assembly to effect the rotation of said rotary member, characterized in that the functional connection between one of said elements and their respective member includes and elastic means that urge the first mentioned element to a normal operating position with respect to its corresponding member, by virtue of which, after the return movement of said piston caused by "kickback", said elastic connection will be overcome, effecting the movement of the first mentioned element from its normal position with respect to its corresponding member, while said securing element engages with the said ratchet element.
