Abstract

A writing instrument with a hinge member for advancing and removing the writing tip comprising a hollow elongate body having an opening at one end, an elongated writing unit movable longitudinally within said body between an advanced position in which an part of said unit extends through said opening of said end and a retracted position, said writing unit defining an upward facing surface, loading means in said body urging said writing unit towards said retracted position, means for moving said writing unit from said retracted position to said advanced position, said means comprising an articulated actuating member movable internally in said body, said movement of said actuating member being operative to cause a fit between said surface directed upwardly of said writing unit and said actuating member such as to drive said writing unit up to said advanced position, means for applying a force to said actuating member having a component extending in a direction generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of said body, said force being operable to cause the articulated movement of said actuator member inside said body and to thereby move said writing unit to said advanced position, and uncoupling means to maintain said writing unit in said advanced position.
