Abstract

The cutting edge of a razor blade is coated with a substantially monomolecular layer of a compound possessing a hydrophobic group and at least one polar group. The compound may be a fatty acid, a salt thereof an amine, amide, alcohol or ketone, a phosphate, phosphonate, sulphate or sulphonate. The compound may be applied in the molten state by dipping or spraying or in solution by dipping or by floating a solution of the compound on water and passing the blade therethrough, or by electro-de-position for example from a bath of an alkali metal soap using a voltage of 10 volts and a current of from 200-500 milliamperes, piles of blades being arranged as anodes between two coaxial cylindrical stainless steel cathodes. When the compound is a fatty acid or derivative thereof or a phosphate, phosphonate, sulphate or sulphonate it is said to bond itself to the surface by chemical reaction, forming a metal soap with the metal surface. The remaining compounds are said to be bonded to the blade by adhesion forces. In examples, stearic acid, sodium stearate and octadecyl phosphonate are referred to.ALSO:The cutting edge of a razor blade is coated with a substantially monomolecular layer of a compound possessing a hydrophobic group and at least one polar group. A further coating of a thermoplastic material such as polythene may be applied by spraying a solution thereof followed by heating to fuse the coating.
