Abstract

An electro-acoustic transducer of the dynamic type (e.g. a loud-speaker or microphone) comprises a unitary structure 1 (Fig. 1) of permanent magnet sintered oxide anisotropic material having a coercive force of at least 750 oersteds and formed with a plurality of poles, separated by grooves forming air gaps 3 between the poles. The poles are located in a common plane orthogonal to the direction (A) of easy magnetization of the material. The transducer further comprises a flat diaphragm 2 carrying at least one flat electrical conductor 5 which is formed so as to include a plurality of strips connected in series and extending parallel to each other and arranged so as to lie adjacent the air gaps 3 between the poles. The diaphragm 2 preferably is of polyester foil and conductor 5 is of aluminium. Duets 4 reduce acoustic damping. The air gaps 3 may be of rectangular or trapeziform cross-section. The ducts 4 may be formed by providing the unitary structure 1, on both sides, with a plurality of parallel grooves, the two groups of grooves being at right-angles to, and intersecting, one another. In a loud-speaker, two identical unitary structures 1 may be provided, one on each side of the diaphragm 2.
